Our idyllic small town was originally settled by Dutch immigrants in the early 1700s and remained rather isolated until the mid-1800s when the railroad chugged through and changed everything. Eventually, Closter became known as a garden paradise where the people of lower Manhattan went to escape city life. Over time, those weekend visitors stayed, and Closter evolved into a commuter town where many of its residents still travel to New York City for work. Closter Nature Center. This non-profit organization is dedicated to the preservation of 136 acres of woods, streams, wetlands, and trails in downtown, Closter, New Jersey. Bring the entire family to experience and enjoy our natural world, and check out camps and lectures providing hands-on educational experiences for folks of all ages. Belskie Museum of Art & Science. Founded by the Closter Lions Club, the museum is dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of the works of Abram Belskie, a sculptor, medical illustrator, and Closter resident. Admission is free.
